六、报告内容：Aging is a major risk factor for many chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disease, and cancer. As the global population progressively ages, age-related diseases have become some of the world’s most prominent health problems. For millennia humankind has been dreaming for fountain of youth that will reverse aging. However, without a fundamental understanding of the mechanism of aging, fountain of youth has remained fiction or imagination of artists. Recent breakthroughs in aging research have changed the situation drastically and brought us the hope that we may turn the fiction into reality. In this talk, I will describe some of our recent efforts in tackling aging using systems biology approaches. We have developed microfluidic systems that allow us to directly observe the process of aging at the molecular level in single cells throughout their lifespan. Parallel to the development of single cell technology, we have developed new genetic systems that enable us to perform high-throughput screening of mutations/drugs that extend lifespan. Combined with genetic analysis of human longevity from genome-wide association studies, we hope to discover small molecule drugs that can slowdown or even reverse aging, and thus significantly extend human healthspan.
